The course was designed by English architect Frank Pennink. Opened in 1969, it was completely refurbished in 1996, when several improvements were introduced and a new clubhouse built. The course is renowned for the way the designer skilfully utilized the natural contours of the land, maintaining vegetation, consisting mainly of pine-woods.

Situated near Cavoeiro, this course is visually very attractive, with waterfalls and a wonderful views over the sea and was designed by Dave Thomas. His most famous project is the Belfry near Birmingham, England. That course has had the honour of hosting the Ryder Cup no less than three times, and was recently the venue in 2002.
